There are a lot of homes in the El Dorado area up for sale this season. With the economy the way that it is, though, you have to wonder why, as it’s a terrible time to sell. On the other hand, it’s a perfect time to buy, and the El Dorado hills are one of the nicest places you’ll likely find affordable homes.

For one thing, it’s a ten minute drive from Sacramento, the capitol city of California, and the thriving downtown scene and abundance of businesses to be found in a capitol city. However, it’s halfway into the foothills, and suffers from much less traffic and congestion than the city proper, not to mention having larger lots for sale and better views from those lots. You can’t beat a hilltop house for great views out your windows, after all. From parts of the town, not only can you see the great expanse of the Sacramento valley stretching out below you, you can also see the majestic peaks of the Sierra Nevadas rising above.

If the proximity to a big city like Sacramento isn’t your thing, El Dorado is also conveniently close to the mountains. Ski trips are a short drive away for residents, and if you enjoy hiking in the woods or just watching wildlife, you can live near outdoor adventures year-round.

Of course, as with any place, there are some downsides. As the town is relatively spread out and rural, it can be a longish walk to get groceries or visit other local businesses, and if the hustle and bustle of larger cities appeals to you, it can seem too quiet, and perhaps even dull. Still, for geographic convenience and beautiful views, El Dorado is one of the best affordable housing markets you’re likely to find.
