The Beautiful City of Vancouver, BC. The land of mountains, ocean, beautiful scenery, the 2010 Olympics and unfortunately bed bugs!! Bed bugs are becoming an increasing problem in many major cities. The amount of reported cases of bed bugs in Vancouver have doubled every year for the last 6 years. At this time New York City is one of the predominate leaders in bed bug infestation. According to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, there have been 8,830 bed bug complaints in the first 6 months of 2008!!

For visitors coming to Vancouver, especially for the 2010 Olympics, there is likely to be an even further increase in bed bug infestation as visitors bring them along from their origin of residence.

For those living in Vancouver or planning to travel here, there are several precautions you can take to prevent the spread of bed bugs.

The first thing you should do is inspect your bed. Look around the headboard, baseboard, mattress and box spring. Take off the sheets and inspect the creases and seams looking for any evidence of bed bugs, larvae, blood stains, or brown smears. Hopefully you will not see anything alive or dead in your inspection. For further protection, bring a mattress encasement and pillow protector to keep the bugs from surfacing if they are hiding deep into the mattress.

If you are traveling with luggage, do not leave it on the floor or bed. Make sure you put in on a luggage rack or desk away from the bed. Make sure your clothes are in over sized Ziploc bags or hung up. Do not leave any clothes on the bed, chairs or placed in the hotel dresser drawers.

Before you leave your visiting city, shake out your clothes, inspect your shoes, luggage and anything else that you have brought along, and make sure everything is sealed tightly in Ziploc bags. Upon arrival to your home, wash all your clothes in hot water, or put them in a dryer on the highest heat setting for 20 minutes. You might even want to consider dry cleaning them. Use a mattress encasement and spread Diatomaceous Earth around your sleeping quarters. Diatomaceous Earth has razor sharp particles that lacerate the bed bugs resulting in their death.

If you encounter any signs of bed bugs or bites on your skin, call an exterminator immediately before they get out of control. One bed bug has the capacity to lay out to 500 eggs in there lifetime which is usually a lifespan of 18 months.

Don’t let yourself become a victim to these night feeders.
